Now i love me some scooters and I love me some skateboarding skatepark action, but this dude, Boulon, is doing something pretty rad. It isn’t a huge stretch and I’m sure it’s been done before. My man Boulon doesn’t even bust out huge tricks. Just the fact that he’s doing it is what makes me give him props.

Brighton, England – 1965: One of Baron Bomburst’s Vulgarian spies pilots a modded Lammy – rigged with two surfboards and a water wheel – into the English Channel. The archival video description makes a point of noting that “it stays afloat”. So it does.

Evidently this didn’t catch on. Hell of a way to treat a vintage Lambretta, even if it wasn’t vintage, yet. Check the video.

Colonial Beach Camping Trip

I rode up to Colonial Beach, VA on Saturday to scout locations for a camping trip/meetup with some of the folks from DC. I shot some video while I was up there, showing the southernmost beach in the town, a ride up the Potomac shore, a bar deck, Monroe Bay Campground and Westmoreland State Park.

The trip will take place September 10th and 11th.

Nice tribute to scooters in today’s Boston Globe. The article describes a group ride on the South Shore and looks at the benefits of scooter ownership:

Petersen Automotive Museum

From Friday’s New York Times:

The image of scooters often includes the cool (think Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday”) and the quirky (almost everyone else), and now the entire spectrum is on display in Los Angeles.

The Petersen Automotive Museum is showcasing nearly 100 scooters of many shapes, sizes and eras during its exhibit “Scooters: Size Doesn’t Always Matter,” which opens on Saturday and runs through next May.

“No one has ever done a comprehensive study on what a scooter is,” said Leslie Kendall, the museum’s curator, in a telephone interview. “Just because it’s small doesn’t mean it’s a scooter.”

I’d love to go – it’s a shame it’s on the other side of the country.

Will Daniel Day-Lewis Do the 1st Sunday?

Style Weekly wonders where Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis will live when they’re filming Lincoln (a movie about some Yankee politician, I’m told), but what I wonder is if Daniel Day-Lewis will show up to scooter events?

In Eversmile, New Jersey (a movie about some Yankee dentist, I’m told) he rode a motorcycle across South America, but I’ve always seen Day-Lewis as more of a scooter feller.

In the event he chooses to show up at one of our First Sunday Rides, I’m sure we’ll treat him as an honored guest.

Sleepless on Scooters

Larry Crowne opens July 1st in the USA. Scootering, evidently, is a substantial plot element.

Here’s a crazy idea: we should get Bowtie to pay for our beers and show up en masse for the midnight show after Scooter Club. You can’t buy better press than a dozen candy-colored, powered-two-wheel triumphs-of-the-human-spirit riding into your lot at midnight to view the cinema. That will be my argument, anyway.
