Don’t have any room in your life for yet another scooter rally in May? Yeah, neither do we! But what if it…wasn’t a rally? What if it was the inner mid-Atlantic’s favorite moderate-to-midsized co-ed mixed scooter camping…thing? Not if, but indeed when, the answer is yes, form an orderly line on the right for DOGWOOD CLASSIC 20.
This makes SIX years of us nerds darkening the vinyards of Mountain Run Winery in Culpeper, VA. There’s obviously wine (really good wine), but did you know there are:
- Toilets! Ooh la la, how continental!
- Showers! HOT showers at that!
- Beautiful rides through mountain foothills, pizza dinner Friday night, homemade brekkie from Chef Ed Willeman Saturday morning, various games of skill that somebody we’ll pull out of our collective ass at the last second. Solid hangs for shady people.
- REMEMBER THAT’S MEMORIAL DAY DINGDONGS, YOU GET A DAY OFF AFTER.1
The fun starts on Friday, May 23rd at 5:00 pm and ends before noon on Sunday, May 25. There are plenty of long, winding country roads upon which to scoot, wines which to quaff, and wedgies to dispense. You’ll like it, we promise.2
ITINERARY:
Friday, May 23rd:
5:00 p.m. – Arrive at Mountain Run Winery in Culpeper, VA. The campsite a left turn off the main road in. Note for riders: this is a deep gravel road, so take your time with it. If we get our shit together, there should be signs leading your way into the campsite.
Pitch camp anyplace on the two big fields, really. You should see our club trailer, Big Red, set up near the Greenlee Tavern, which boasts bathrooms and hot showers. (The…tavern, not the trailer.) This year, we have the ENTIRE RUN of that side of the winery, so you can set up shop wherever.
6:00 p.m. – Informal hang/meet ‘n’ greet at the main winery building down the road.
8:00 p.m. Dinner and beer back at Greenlee Tavern.
Saturday, May 24th:
10:00 a.m. (or whenever we get our shit together) – Brekkie is served by Big Red! Coffee, eggs, bacon, fake bacon, hashbrowns, veggie sausage, and just general what-have-you.
12:00 p.m. – Ride departs! The ride is about an hour long and putts into Culpeper at about 35 mph (i.e. 50cc friendly). We’ll hit up gas at the beginning and hopefully have a stop midway through. IF YOU WANT A LONGER RIDE: Tough shit! (looks off camera, does classic R. Dangerfield “collar grab” maneuver) Uhh..there’s lots of destinations that are a little further away that make for good rides. We’ll do some research.
1:00 p.m. – Ride arrives in Culpeper and we get beers at Far Gohn Brewing. You can either eat pizza at Far Gohn or catch lunch in town.
After lunch, feel free to peruse Culpeper’s quaint downtown. Be sure to check out Fulton Found which sells a bunch of hipster moto stuff (Hedon helmets, cafe gloves, etc.) and the Enormous Bodega Beside Far Gohn, which sells basically everything from cow tongue to cowboy hats.
2:45 p.m – If the weather favors it, we’ll lead a ride from Culpeper to the mythic swimming hole down the road, so be sure to bring/wear those swim trunks. Doesn’t look great right now but you never know…? Question mark…? 5:30-ish – Early evening lawn games! There’s HUGE BALLS involved. Afterwards, we’ll have the flat tops goin’ so feel free to toss whatever you want on there. We’ll probably have utility hot dogs and chips and such for dinner, so if you want something else, chef it on up for ya’self. From then on out it’s [scene missing]
Sunday, May 25th
10 a.m. on – Leave, pretty much. We’ll have coffee and some breakfast pastries and stuff.
